General News.

At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, <i letter was read from the Seeietary of the Treasury, asking the council to inform Government whether the council intended to take advantage of the £2.j0 subsidy (at the rate nf fl for £1,) for the re-erection of the Waihi bridge. Considerable discussion ensued, and it was the opinion of most of the councillors that the mining companies at Wai hi should pay part of the county's subsidy. Cr. Moore, who is a mine manager at Waihi, thought this was fair, and al&o stated that if it were decided to re erect the bridge it should not be put at the old site, but a little higher up, where a tiestle bridge could be constructed very cheaply, owing to the shallowness of the water at this point The matter was finally referred to the board of works, who will bring up their report at the next meeting. A sum of £150 was reported from Government as a subsidy to mining works at the Tui, Te Aroha. The Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote, demanding the immediate payment of the entire yearly subsidy due from the county, stating that in default proceedings at law would be at once taken. No action was taken. It is expected therefore that the council will be sued. On Thursday evening last the Mackay Town school-house was burnt to the ground, with all the school appurtenances and the entire personal effects of the schoolmaster, Mr Whitaker. An insurance of £50 was reported. No cause is assigned for the fire. A new school house will probably be erected. Professor Lio Medo played to good houses for four nights during the past week. Four diflerent entertainments have been here during the past three weeks. "Professional" people must think well of Paeroa. A number of applications under the " Aid to Prospecting Regulations" have been received by the local body from old miners, who wish to prospect an alleged goldh'eld. One application has been entertained, and the party start shortly. The whereabouts of the prospect is a secret at present.
