DISHEARTENING NEWS FROM KIMBERLEY. DIGGERS RETURNING. [by telegraph.— own correspondent.] Auckland, Last Night.
Australian news per Alameda states that the steam« Sikh, which arrived at Cooktown from Horn? Kong via Port Darwin, brings 80 diggers returning from Kimberley, who all describe the place as unfit for dogs to live in. A. few hour* before the Sikh left Port Darwin the Menmuir arrived with 1M) returned diggers from Kimberley. Official and Press telegrams state that the teams returning to Derby describe the road an srood. Alluvial ffold is becoming scarce, owing to the lack of water, the diggers having rushed too soon. On© party of diggers shot at O Donnel, who is now under police protection. Many teams are returning from the fields without money or rations. Experienced men have returned to Derby, but intend going back. . Parties are going to Derby daily. There are 2000 men on the field at the present time. Reports of results are conflicting as to alluvial gold.
