A Fire Caused by Water.
A fire occurred last night in one of P. H, Pickering and Co.'s stores, containing sulphur, lime, flour, and miscellaneous goods. The cause is supposed to have bpen flood water coming in contact with the lime. The fiie brigade worked well under trying circumstances. The engine had to be worked a long distance off, or the flood in the streets near the store would have extinguished the furnace. The estimated lo*s on the stock is fifiOO, and the damage to the building £200. The insurances over all Pickering and Co.'s stores and buildings are £500 in the Equitable, and £1000 in the National ; on the stock, £3500 in the National, and £1000 in the Liverpool, London and Globe. The building was reinsured in the New Zealand office for £100, and the stock in the South Biiti^h for £12.")0, in the Union for £."K)0, and in the New Zealand for £100. The building, which was partially destroyed and gutted, was the oldest wooden store in Marlborough.
