THE CAMBRIDGE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

No reply having been received from Mr (t. S. Cooper, Under Secretary, to the telegrams asking for further instruction!, despatched by Mr J. P. Thomson, clerk of tho Cambridge Town Board, Mr Houghton, chairman of the board, wired to tho Under-Secr^tary to the effect that tho board had accepted his version of the case .is contained in his first telegram, and would continue to held office until September next year. Mr J. Y. Thomson, as returning officer, \r.\f also withdrawn the notices relating to the elections. There in no doubt that owing to the circumstance* of the case the present body can legally retain office, as borough councillors for another year, but whether this would be the proper course to pursue is another question. There is a strong feeling abroad that such a course would be contrary to tho spirit of the Act, and that the gentlemen wh» hold office at present, having held it for two years (the term for which they wore elected) should hesitate before they ivail themselves of the chance of keeping their seats for another year, by what certainly a fluke. It is also »uj?gestod that as the present hitch has occurred something in the shape of a proclamation or ()rder-in«Conncil will be needed to satisfactorily settle the difficulty ; and that, as the new Act, winch comes into force next yer.r, has been specially framed to suit small communities, advantage may be taken of the present trouble by endeavouring to get a new proclamation constituting Cambridge a borough under the new Act.
