Gkrat excitement \» still providing at Tim«ru over tlie Hall ca«p. The court wa<» crowded to the utmost this morning Messrs J. Beswick, R.M., E. Elworthy and H. J. Lecren were on the bench. The *aine counsel were engagednslast week, except Mr M.irtin, Crown Prosecutor of Cliritchurch, who appears with Mr White. He stated the ca->e for the prosecution .it ionic length, and wid that he would call evidence to show that Hall was in po«.»ciiion of large quantities of antimony, and had purchased a book, "Taylor on Poisons," Ust year in Timaru, though '"Thos, H.iH, Dunedin, 1K82," was written in it. When arrested, the male prisoner had attempted to destroy something in his pocket, and had otherwise acted in a manner to c.iuse grave suspicion. As to hits motive, Hall was in a very had financial position, and forced a bill for £200 in December last, while Mrs Hall's life had been insured for £'(5000 in the Australian Mutual Provident Association. Evidence would be given that a quantity of raps soaked in kerosine had been found in Hall's house, which must ha\e been planted there by <nc or other of the prisoner*" He concluded by stating that if he could bring evidence to ahow the truth of half he had put before them in this address, he would have rundu out a more than prima facie case. The fir->t witness called was Inspectoi I'roham, who, in company with Detective Kirby and two constables, arrested the accused. Hall made an attempt to get rid of .something in his trouper's pockets. Wit ness seized his hand, and Houston tried to separate them. In one of Hall's pockets was found a corkless phial, in which was some liquid and crystals, and the cork na« found on the hearth rug. Witness searched him, and had hermetically sealed the articles found there, and sent them to Professor black. In.«.pector Broham wan tinder examination when the luncheon adjournment arrived.
