CAMBRIDGE MAYORAL ELECTION.
A mketin'u of Mr Gwynneth's supporters was bold at tho M .ironic Hotel on Saturday night, Mr A. Clemcnta J.P. in the chair. An article which appeared in a iucal paper of the 25th inst., was read and commented upon, and the following resolution moved by Mr W. Kinc.iid was carried uuani mously :— That this meeting is of opinion that the editor, being comparatively a stranger to this district, lias displayed a want of impartiality as a journalist in die t.vtinsr as ho did in tho issue of the 25th instant to the ratepayers of thin borough as to whom they shall elect as firßt Mayor, ' and that if he will allow them freedom of judgment in municipal affairs, that they, ou the other hand, huve no intention or desire to interfere with the freedom of his opinions as a journalist, or as to the management of hi* paper. It was replied on the motion of Mr C. Boyce, seconded by Mr J). Carnachan that it having been reported Mr Gwynneth was not duly qualified to utand for election as Mayor of Cambridge, Application has been made to the returning officer for his opinion, when he certified that Mr Gwynneth was qualified, also enclosing the opinion obtained from the town board solicitor on the .subject, which opinion wte laid before the meeting, ami read as follows :— Question. — Can o-gents of property be inserted in the burgess roll, in plaoe of the owners? Answer :— No. Owners and occupiers for six monthi ,xt lt\ist aie the only prisons whose names .should appear on the roll, but you cannot alter yours now. Vide section 38 of tho Act. The names of tho owners or occupies should bo substituted for those of the agents at the earliest legal opportunity. There might be a way of getting these names struck off the roll by going to the Supreme Court, but I have not fully gone into the question. On the motion of Mr Jas. Hally, seconded by Mr .1. I). Arnaboldi, it wasie-ohcd that tnis meeting is of opinion that it itheir duty to bring under the notice of the ratepayers the fact that one person not holding any interest in the borough is down on the roll for four votes, as agent for ab •<cntees, and consider it has been done for the purpose of cramming the roll, »nd placing undue power in certain persons hands. . At the close of the meeting, after being urgently requested, Messrs Jas. Hally and A. Clements consented to stand for the position of councillors, at which great satisfaction was expressed. The meeting then broke np.
