WORKS IN WAIPA.
The following is the engineer's report, presented at the last meeting of the Waipa County Council :—: — Sin, — I beg to Mibmit for your information the following leport on tho roads and works in the county dining the past month. The fine weather during the month of July and the early part of this month was favourable to the condition of the road?, which, with a few exception*, were in fair p liable condition. The weather ha*, however, broken .ij,miii, and it may be expected that tho-«« roads subjected to heavy traffic will be mi'ie 01 l»s> cut up. Some of tho worst parts of the Hamilton- Wbatuwliata wamp road have been icpaued, and I still have a man looking aftei this mad. I am informed 1 1 a*, a, sawmill is shoitly to bo started in the bush adjoining this road, about half-way between the two township*. At present it is barely possible to keep this r>>ad in a passable con lition with even tho light traffic of the settlers in the district. Should it be subjected to the additional traffic of heavy laden timber waggons, I do not think it would cany the traffic for aweek. Tl c Kihikilu -Te Awamutu mad has been m a fairly satisfactory condition dming the pa-t month. I have had a. man during par*, of of the time attending to the -uiface repairs. In this case .aid that at the HamiltonWhatavvh.it a mad it will bo necessary to keep men employed on the surface for some time in each month during the winter months-. The Kotoiangi svauip road w show ing signs "f weakness in a good m.my place*. .Fortunately the tiaffic here is light. A man vvitliahoi-e and diay for a week will overtake the nece— .uy it-pair-. Some rep.iii-s h ive been c.uried out on the Te Awamutu-Ale\andia load. The traffic on which has been pietty heavy for some time. This load htill lequne.s attt ntion, and tho serv ices of a man tor a few days as occasion, demand- will be needed. The fencing1 aero*, the embankments over the brick culvert, ne.u Mi Allan"-, is partly broken down, and ought to be made good with pott-* and Imbed vviie. The conti actor hi* hni-hed the lepm- t> the Mangapikc budge at Vle\,indt.i. I find, however, when going over tho old timber he ha- allowed! live of the stiingers to be carried away by the stream. These, however, weie decayed to a considerable extent. Nevertheless it was part of the contract to prevent this, and to -tack the timber on completion of the job on the land adjoining the bridge. I would recomend that tho old timber fiom this biidge be sold as. it now lie-*. The balance due to the contractor i- £22 inclusive of deposit, which sum I lecoininend to be paid. Mr Day has laid the pipes in the drain cut by him acres-, the county load near "Whatawhata. The work has been done in a satisfactory manner, although they have been laid a few feet too much to one *ide of the road. Th« drainage contract on the Hamilton What*whata load, has been completed, but owing to a misunderstanding about the place of meeting with the contractor* I have not been able to get the work measured up. Mr Foxall has written ro me to -ay he is satisfied with tho nature of the work through the bush. No work has been done on the (Jifford's Hill contiact dming the month, bevmid !epaiiing two very bad places on the hill. These repairs were authorised at the last meeting of the council. Painting Cambridge bridge. Mr (iapes- the contractor for painting thi-' bridge hay ing failed to complete this contract in accordance with iiistiuctions, the works hay c been re-let to Mr 1 ). Munro, , Hamilton, for £vS 10s. In compliance vv ith instruction*, 1 waited on Mr Fitzputnck,. chairman of the Newcastle Town Board, regarding the furnishing of a new rope for the punt at that place. 1 informed him <-f the decision of the council to pay one-half the cost of a new roj>e, which, T may say, after inspection I h'nd will be< needed. He, however, stated that tho members of the town board could not see [ their way to contribute anything towards the purchase of a rope, as they considered this was a m.ittei that rested between the county and the (.Jot eminent, consequently nothing has been done in the case. With rocaid to the portion of load between Mr Kybuiu's and the council chambers where an accident happened some time ago by the upsetting of :i trap, the road here is 1 tinned over side-lying ground, being carried on a bank between 4ft. and ."»ft. deep on tho low sidf, and about 18ft. in width in tho nair >we-t part. The road is available thei full width op|M)-ite Mr Rybum's store, but suddenly contracts after passing that point to the width mentioned above, and no doubt ks a nasty place to encounter with an unmanageable hoi.se, a.s in the case that led to the accident ; still there are many very much worse places than this in the county. It would take about tl.*> to raise the road t<> a uniform level across this hollow, in accordance with instructions tendeis have been called for repahing and maintaining portion of the Hamilton-Newcastle road, and for grading in the Tuhikaramea district. Tendeis for these works aie due to be opened to-day.— l have the honour to be, kir, your obedient servant, Alkx. Ahm-trovo-, County Engineer Kihikihi, yth August, lN>b.
