WORKS IN NEWCASTLE. A Rejoinder.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— l have observed Mr Corboy's letter m your issue of the 10th ,inst., and apart from the personalities in it, which are unworthy of notice, I would ask why he has not published the board's minutes, winch cover the question at issue. This would be an easy and simple way of proving my incorrectness. If any other ratepayer desires it I will be glad to do so. Mr Corboy is naturally aggrieved at the constitution of the present board, seeing that it declined to allow an expenditure equal to half the annual rate upon the ■work" set down in my list as a road to Corboy's land, limiting the expenditure, 44 contrary to all precedent," to £30. A public meottng is thieatened in Mr Corbby's letter. Nothing could be more necessary, for there is in this district an instance of misappropiiation of rate money which cannot be equalled in Waikato, hundreds of pounds having been wasted ■upon works of practical use to none, while tho ratepayers in the other parts of the district are .shut in for want of roads. The . principal grievance just now is that the board aie determined that all portion" of the Newcastle District bhould equally benefit from the rates which they are called upon annually to pay, and I would ask Mr^ Corboy, or indeed any other ratepayer, when in the past a sum oi &150 has been so equally divided throughout the district as was shown in my list ?— I am, yours tiuly, E.
