The. home team went in first innings, and succeeded in making a marvellous .stand again&t the An.- tralianss. Mr W. W. Read scored 80 runs, and R. Abel and Maurice Read, who followed, maintained their places at the wickets until time was called. Both players completely nutate! cd the bowling, and ran up the scores respectively 144 and 1 .">(;, and wera not out when the stumps were drawn for the day, the score then standing 427 with three wickets dow n.
