REMARKABLE ACTION.
Iv the Queen's Bench division on the 17th June, the case of Jones v. Tooth and others was heard. The plaintiff sued to recover a restoration of her rights as a member of a cominuuity or sisterhood at Woodside, near Croydon, of which community .she had been lady superior. The other defendants, except the Rev. Arthur Tooth, were ladies, also members of the community. The plaintiff asked for a declaration that she was entitled jointly with the other ladies to the property of the religious community at Woodside, or elsewhere. He, for the defendants, would consent that such a declaration for the plaintiffs rights should be made. A number of other causes of action they had agreed should be referred. Miss Jones also claimed against Mr Tooth damages for certain libels and slanders, and to this various defences were pleaicd. It had been agreed that the, claim to defences in this respect should be struck out, anil the defendants withdraw any act, letter, or statement which conveyed any imputation whatever upon the plaintiff's conduct or her character, or upon her fitness for membership of any religious community similar to that at Woodside. Mr Lock wood, Q,C, said that he appeared for Miss Jones, who, up to December, 18S4, was lady superior of the Woodside convent at Croydon. Under existing circumstances she did not wish to return to that community, By the terms agreed to her object had been obtained, and she would therefore consent to judgment upon the terms which had been mentioned. After this there would not rest any imputation upon her, and she could reside at any kindred institution to that at Woodnide. His Lordship gave judgment in accordance with the arrangement.
