AT THE CIRCUS.
BV FKUX.
Within the crowded area of a circus tent, Knights and ladies prane'd, and motley clowns so silly Their clever fooling play'd with witty nonsense blent, A gentle tmicleu sat, f#ir as any lily. In the calm depths of clear lit eyes, easily upturn'd. Shyly I ventured once to cast my timid gaze, The danger of this sweet delight full soon I learn'd, Shamofac'd I chaf'd to look again, as in amaze This gentle maiden's glance, quiet, demure, and sh.y, Prompted a harmless trick that one might dare to play. With care I pointed out each thing then hanging high, As banners, flags, and lantern fixed for duedi-play. "This Japanese pray mark, \uth paper butterflies, How lo\ ingly they rise and flutter round his fan."' Again that tender light so rare beam'd from her eves ; I ble&s'd the happy thought that had elevis'd my plan. Closely we watch'd aloft, the dangerous trapeze, Where twisted human form distinction seem'd to court. '' See th.it rash man how helpless on the rope he lays ;" The maiden artlessly unveil'd the charm I .sought. Iv time the band had ceased to bray, the ring was bare ; Then holes I gra\ely show'd her in the wide-spanned toof. Her .smiling look demure, told she psrceiv'd my move, II Ah, you're a fraud " was gently uhi.sper'd in reproof.
