There was a time I only thought The bnght sun shone when thou wert near, And reckoned that the sunniest day Without thee, love, was dark and drear. There was a time the beacon light Of hope illumined life\s dull tread ; I followed then, as one in .sleep, The halo light around thy head. There was a time when slumber brought Sweet dreams of thee to soothe my rest, When waking I but hailed the morn To meet thecLfcnd.be doubly blest. And yet the other day we met, And hand touched hand without one thrill,It tolled the knell of passion's thrall, But friendship can survive it still.
