RAGLAN.

On the Bth this month wo had the steamer Gairloch with passengers from Onehunga, and on the following Saturday the steamer Lalla Roohk, the latter bringing a large cargo of goods. The Northern Company's steamer Staffa, has left Onehunga for this place. It ia be to hoped the company will take up tho trade as it amounts to a good sum during the year and is certain to increase. At the last meeting of the Karioi Road Board tenders were called for the following works : — Cutting at Parris's and erection of bridge to be built upon stone piers, at McNicohlson's. Other works were defered until next meeting. The expenses of the representative upon the hospital board were directed to be paid. The three highway boards h:ive now paid expenses. A fresh representative has not been yet been appointed. The weather is now beautiful, settlers aro busy all over tho district preparing the ground ready for the crop*. The young grass is coming on nicely. The sixty acres growing upon the bu*h clearing of Mr Galvin, Te Mata, looks grand He is ha\ ing twenty acres more bush fallen this season. It is not often we have to record the death of any settler in this district, and then mostly the old. Mr Phillips * a very old, and much respected settler was interred last Saturday. He had been ailing for some time past. A large number of settlerß mot around the grave from all parts of the district. Much sympathy being expressed with his family. It is said that the Government have laid out one thousand acres around the Whainearoa Hot Springs as a " village settlement." I hear it is an excellent piece of ground. A large number of native «ara now there suffering from various complaints. The Domain Board meet on Saturday next, and it is to be hoped steps will be taken to develop these excellent springs as a "health resort "—(Own Correspondent.) Raglan, 22nd July, 1886.
