DEATH OF AN OLD RAGLAN SETTLER.

For a long time past Mr H. Phillips has been seriously ill, lately his illness assumed a more determined form, and on* Thursday night last, the loth., he parsed away in peace, surrounded by his sorrowing children and grandchildren. Mr Phillips was one of the early pioneer settlers ot this district, having landed in Raglan with his wife, three sons, and three daughters over 30 years -ago. He took up his land at Pukerangi in the Mata district, where he passed through all the trials and vicissitudes of an early settler's life, cutting a home out of the then dense and well-nigh impenetrable bush, pushing his way under all circumstances and always looking with satisfaction on his hard earned homestead and surroundings. Lately, through failing health, he has resided in Raglan with his youngest daughter, Mrs Bulfoid, and close to his sons, who are in busin.es* here. The interment took place on the 17th in the Raglan cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. (I. Stephenson. Notwithstanding the almost impassable state of our muddy roads, a large number of settlers from all parts of the district attended the funeral, thus testifying to the respect in which deceased was held by those who were acquainted with him, as a hospitable, honest and industrious settler. He was born in the year 1811. Consequently he was 75 years old.— (A Correspondent).
