Popular opinion in regard to the Union Insurance Company's refusal to recognise Mr MeKie's claim for compensation for the destruction of hm hou*c by the T.ir.nvera eruption was plainly indicated last night at Mr Burton's lecture in the Athenasum, When the lecturer announced the fm-t there was n perfect storm of hisses and hooting, which l.iste 1 .some time. The medal awarded by the Canterbury St. John's Ambulance Society to Mr Mcltae for his heroic efforts for Having life at Wairoa was pinned on the breast of the gallant recipient at Government House by the Governor, who accompanied the presentation witli some well-chosen eulogistic words. The medal is of gold, with this inscription :— " To J. Mcßue, for services rendered at Wairoa, June 10th, 1888."
