FOOTBALL. Hamilton v. Cambridge.
Thk return match between these clubs came off on Saturday, and resulted in a victory for Cambridge by two tries to one. The tivy to Hamilton was not granted by the Cambridge captain, although given as such by the umpire, therefore no kick for a goal took place. During the first 25 minutes the ball was pretty well in the Hamilton 2o and in the centre of the ground, the Cambridge backs having very little to do.. The ball was carried over the Hamilton goal line by some aix or eight men, and after a protracted struggle, was touched down by a Cambridge man, but the ball, on the decision of the referee, \Vas ordered back to the field, as all had their hands on it in the scrum when it crossed the line. Souter played up splendidly during this spell, and was on the ball the whole time. In the second spell the play was much faster, and several good runs were made. Wood, for Hamilton, ran in, and was tackled by Carnachan, the ball flying from his grasp. A try was clamed and given by the Hamilton umpire, but the Cambridge umpire and the referree not seeing it ot all the Cambridge captain refused to allow the kick at goal, and after- some delay the game was started again. From that out Cambridge rushed the ball continuously on to the Hamilton line, and Morrisey got a try running in from a sci ummage close to the corner post. The kick at goal was a failure. Shortly afterwards and just before time, E. Pilling by a good bit of following up obtained another try, but the angle being a bad one the kick at goal was a failure, and so the game ended, the score being Cambridge 4, Hamilton 2. The game all through was extremely rough, and off side was a conspicuous feature all round in the afternoon play.
