ALEXANDRA.
Last month was an exceedingly unpleasant <>ne, dull and unprofitable : business has j been at a standstill. The natives have now apparently nothing to dispose of, as i not a single canoe load of any description of produce has been brought do\Vn for sale. Sickness has been very prevalent, and a good many deaths have taken place among the natives. Tawhiao still remains at Whatiwhatihoe, but most of. the natives are now attending the Land Court at Kihikihi. Another old and respected inhabitant has been, removed from amongst, jls by the decease of Mrs Jane Smyth, mother of Mrs FjnGh, of the Alexandra t Hotel. Mrs Smyth was an old colonist, having arrived in New South Wales with her late husband in the year 1830, who then belonged to H.Ml'slfth Regiment. • Iri 1834 they proceeded to India, where she remained until .1346. After a short stay in England Mr Siuythe volunteered into the New Zealand Fencihles, and arrived here in 1847.> The Jeceased lady leaves 29 descendants chil-dren/;'grand-children,. and great-grand- > hildren. Her funeral took place yesterday from the residence- of her son-in-law, Mr i ( 'incTi % and was most numerously attended, ■n fact the largest 1 one that has ./ocuired he.ro for many years, the whole of the inhabitants of Alexandra and a great number from various districts being present. The Rev. Mr Hutsfln, Presbyterian Ylmister, officiated, and read the funeral -"rvice over the deceased, and addressed j.ui nj« turners in a most impressive manner. Xmongst those I observed who followed the eniain.s to the grave were the Yen. Archdeacon Clarke, Judge Mair, Major Jack- ' -.on, Mcssr* Germann, A. Scott, J. Scott, T. Kirk, E. Hope, and many other old friends and relatives. Mrs Smythe was one of the first settlers in Alexandra.— (Own Correspondent, July sth.-) •
