CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. An inqii63t was held to-day on the body of Agnes Austin, aged 16, the daughter of Mr Austin, solicitor. She died some what suddenly, without a medical man being in attendance. The medical evidence showed that death had rcaultfd from congestion of the brain. It appeared that the deceased's father had a postmortem examination before that ordered by the coroner, who blamed him for doing it, pointing out that it was illegal. The jury added a rider affirming the advisability of a private post mortem in similar circumstances. At the annual meeting of the Farmers' Co-operative Association this afternoon, a dividend of 7 per cent, was declared. Mr J. T. Mat«on was presented to-day with a handsomely-bound c>py of the West Coast Railway League Pamphlet in recognition of his services to the cause. The criminal sittings open on Monday. There are thirteen cases, including one of arsoa and one of fraudulent tyiukruptcy. The others are mostly larceny.

DUNKDIN, Monday. The City Council have decided to resist the claim made by the hushand of Mr* Finch, killed by the blasting accident The compensation so far paid amounts to £1762 and the total amount in respect of Finch's claim is not expected to exceeded £200. A tender has been accepted by the Public Works Depaitment for a section of the Otago Central Company. It is expected to give work to b"0 unemployed.
