Arson. George McCa>hin, a carter, and his wife were charged at the police court to-d.»y with S' ttiug fire to a dwelling for the purpose of defrauding the South British Company of £200. Sergt. Pratt in opening the case said evidence would be given that two determined attempts had been made te fire the building ; th it on the fiot attempt A mm named Micih^y extinguished the flames, and found ragx saturated with kerosene, that on the second attempt the female prisoner tried to discourage an alarm by asserting that there was no fire, even while the flames were crackling inside, and that, further, rags were found saturated with kerosene, \fter several witnesses hud been examined the case was remanded until Monday, the court declining to accept bail.
Sale of Mining Shares. Messrs Tonks and Co. offeied today 5000 forfeited shares in the Kenilwortn Gold and Silver Mining Company, Karangahake, but only 2000 sold at 4d each.
The Case of the PetrelThe Petrel case again occupied the court all day, and was remanded.
The Barrier Murder. The Hinemoa from Wellington via Whangarei was signalled inside Tiritiri. She then parsed out of s-ight. After leaving Whangaru she visited the various ports of the Great Banier in search of the Sovereign of the Seas, and has now probably continued the search in the direction of Coromandel. This course was previously travelled by the Rowena and Awhina, so there is little chance of ascertaining any fresh in formation concerning either the missing cutter or her crew.
News from the Lakes. News has been received from Rotorua that the soda splines at Roten are boiling so furiously that they have been cut off retreat of natives from Rotorna, who were trying to reach tho coast by that route.
