At the Police Court to-day, Johu Dunn and Patrick Maher were separately charged with committing » criminal assault on a woman named Dodd, residing at Waiotahi creek. The police applied for a remand until Friday in order to allow of the arrest of another man believed to be implicated in the affair, which was granted. Bail was refused.

District Court. At the District Court to-day, the case Vialou v. Wilson and Home, claim £77, wages for work done at Lake House for the late Robert Graham, was partly heard and adjourned till the 28th.

The Licensing Committee. The Auckland City Ea«t Licensing Committee to-day renewed the licenses which had been adjourned, but refused to liceme the railway refreshment rooms.

The Whaler Petrel. The Petrol enquiry was resumed at 9 o'clock thia morning. The medicine chert wait identified by Hatchinson, steward of the Petrel, and a letter complaining of ill treatment dated the 31st was identified by Harry Swain. The rest of the day -was taken up with reading over dep<»»itions. It is doubtful whether either of the accused will make their defence here, in consequence of the serious charges mode in connection with Cooper* death. The consular agent hat taken possession of Captain Reids modictne chest, and samples of rope with which Cooper was beaten, which will probably be forwarded to the authorities in Washington. When the Petrel was in the Indian Ocean, about a week before Cooper died, four men in the forecastle formed a daring plan, by which to have revenge on the captain and some of the officers for ill-treatment, which they complained of having received. The plan was that the crew should rise and kill the captain and the first and second matei, and then appoint men from amongst the crew to take their places and take the yeasel to the coast of Africa. After getting there they proponed to get some provisions Ashore, set fire to the vessel, and send her to sea. In talking the matter over to the rest of the crew, the promoters of the terrible scheme met with detection, and the whole affair was knocked on the head. The men assert that after this they were punished worse than before.

Shipments of Cattle. A private telegram has been received to the effect that a drove of 500 head of cattle has arrived at Tauranga, and ia now waiting for transhipment to Auckland. The Clansman returns to Tauranga this evening for another cargo.

Attempted Suicide. Frederick Nasmytb, a plumber, attempted to commit suicide by taking " Rough on Rats." Dr. Hooper was called in and administered an emetic. Nasmyth was removed to the hospital.
