THE MANGAPIKO PETITION.

TO THK EDITOR, Sir,— My attraction h«i» been drawn to a meeting convened by the chairman of the Wmipa County Council, asking the chairmen and members of the various road boardn in Waipa to meet at Ohaupo on Tuesday next, to discuss the petition of the MangAuiktt ratepayers. It appear* tonic, to be questionable t;u>to to ask a body of representative men to discuss a lot of set resolutions adopted and acted upon without having given the*n an opportunity ot assisting their framing. It may be all very well to point out a variety of ways of making small savings in the matter of elections, advertising &c, but the whole tedour of the scheme favours centralisation, to which most men now -a -days are opposed. Indeed, I believe a majority of those who have j boon connected with the old road board system and can call to mind the careful supervision exercised over the expenditure in those days, would prefer to resort to the old order of things and do away with the councils. As to the question of saving of expense in the matter of licensing committees, extraordinary vacancies striking rates, &a, what does it all amount to ? and if on;fche onn hand you save this, can you expert the chairman of the county to consent to hoid office with increased duties and responsibilities, without salary ? Certainly it would be unfair to do so. From the same view the engineer, clerk and any other officials would likewise be entitled to increased salaries. Put this £300 or £400 a ye*r against the savings, and see how it wooks out. — I am, &c, "Watch It." Waipa, June 3rd, ISSfi.

It is the intention of the Kilnkihi Town Hoard on Friday, the 18th, to make and levy a general rate ot 9d in the £ on all rateable property within the said district for the period of twelve »onths.
