Their heads they all bare, they murmur » Then on roil their rinks like the waves of the sea ! Bat firm as a foam-fringed, surf-beaten rock, 'Their proof-armoured foeman stands 'gainst the shock ; His. lances are long, in numbers he's strong; Now flee the Swiss peasants, a wolf-hunted flock! Nay, 'twas but a feint, they ■wheel round again* While shafts trom their cross-bows, sharp hissing rain, And Uris wild horn their fate aecms to mourn . At th', unbroken steel hedge they charge all in vain. Hark ! loud a voice thrills above tlie fierce strife : " For freedom a warrior must grve> up his life; Let here my corpse stay, so ours be tut day, My country shall care for my babes and my wife." l\>ur Austrian spears he suddenly jfrasps, They plunge through his breast, "|Now forward !" he gasps. One short moment more, one thu aderintr roar, Each Switzer his foe in the death eiibrace clasps. The battle is o'er, the contest is done, The lake floweth crimson 'neath fast-s itting -•-sun; for Austrian blood hath reddentd the flood, 'Twas freedom that fought, and freodom hath won. —Public Opinion.
