From the crowd and crush of the ball-mom, I wandered with Winifred, where, In the dimness and duak of a nmftll room That oped at the foot of the stair (Apart from the quibble and quarrol Of the throng with its smile and iti frown), The lordc of the lyro and the laurel Looked placidly down. We talked in a lull 'twixt the dance*, That frolicsome holiday time, Ofimrtiea, and plays, and romances, 'Till we drifted at lust into " rhyme'" And I heard her — supremest of plataures — With clear modulation repeat From Aldrich my favourite measures, Surprisingly sweet. A murmurous ripple of laughter Broke -in when I called them divine ; She paused fora moment, and after, She quoted a ditty of mine— A lovetsong, which, though I concealed it, Set all of my pulses astir, And which, though I ne'er had revealed irt, Was wiitten to her." What was it ?— the hour with its glamour,, 1 The perfume, the lights burning low, The violins 1 rhythmical clamour, The mellow and musical How Other toice with its depth of expression,. That led me to boldly confess "/— Ah ! that and what followed confession, ; I leave you to gues» !
