The team of cricketers scut to England by the Melbourne Ciicket Club commenced the season today at .Sheffield Park, Sussex, by a match against a representative team chosen by Lord Sheffield. The match at tr.icted great interest, and there was a very lni £c attendance on the ground, including a number of visitors I rom London. The weather win unfavouiable, and the play was interfered with by heavy rain, which fell at intervals during the day, and the wicket from this cause was somewhat heavy. The liimubui-i of the Australian team were onterUuned at luncheon by L"rd Sheffield. The following composed the Home team : — \V. G. Grace, Gloucestershire, (Captain) ; \V. Xewham, Sussex ; W. W. Reid, Surrey; W. Barnes, Notts ; W. Bates Yo.k ; W. F. Lowers, Notts ; H. Phillips, Sussex ; W. Scotton, Notts ; H. Shaw, Notts ; H. Shrewsbury, Notts ; and G. Ulyett, York. The visitors won the tos«, ,iud the Australian optain elected to send his men first to the w k-kets, Jones and Bruce being deputed to commence proceedings. The latter, however, had only made 2, when he was bowled, and Scott joined Jones. Scott soon began to make the play, but Junes after being credited with H returned a ball into the bowler's hands and had to retire in favour of Gitfen. Considering the dead ness of the wicket, this player made a good stand, adding 10 to the telegraph board before being bowled. Bonner now faced .Scott, and the scoring for u time was very rapid, until Scott misjudged one which took the bails, after he had put together 23 by good sound cricket. Palmer now partnered Bonner, but warn cleverly taken in the field when he scored G, and Evans, the next man, only secured a couple before he was bowled. Blackham and Bonnor now got together, but the latter was run out while attempting to steal a risky one, having played a good innings for IG. Jnrvis, the next coiner, was also run out after making 2. Garrett joined Blackham, who was soon afterwards caught, having contributed 13 to the score. Spofforth came last and carried out his bat for 4, his partner, Garrett, being caught. All the wickets were down for !>B. The Home team were in good form, their bowling being very accurate, while the fielding was excellent, particularly in the matter of catches.
