Ox S.itnrday evening la«t a Gospel temperance meeting w.i«* hold in the open air, opposite tho co-operative store. The Rev. J. S. Smalley, the Wesleyan Conference Kvangelist, provided, and expounded a poitioii of Luke XV.j dwelling p.irtu ulaily on main as a lost and ruined creature through fin, and the wondeiful provision m.ide by Chri«t for man's recovery. The piencher concluded with an appeal on behalf of total abstinence. The c.une was in ikinpr immense strides. He had t-iken something like 1000 pledged in connection with the congregation he had just left in Dunedin. Some striking instances of homes made happy by the temperance pledge were related. The Rev. Mr Delia w, the local Wesleyan minister, gave a solo and address, in which he appealed to th« feelings of common humanity among his hearer* to rally round the temperance banner in order to save tho victims of strong drink. Mrs Sinalley also spoke on the same topic, laying spcci.il emphasis on the poisonous nature of all alcoholic drinks. There' wert» about 200 peramw present, who listened with eager attention. The darkness wai relieved by soveial lantern I',1 ', and tho faces of the speakers were plninly seen. Mr Dellow. A considerable number remained to the nftermceting, and neveral profe-sed to find salvation in Christ.
