THE TONE MASTER.
"Wonderful music there wan one day, Chopin to listen, Li*zt to play. Said Chopin to Liszt, "lain would I learn If the ear may, through music, the colours discern." Tken Liszt struck clear from the highest keys The song of bright skies— the summer breeze ; And Chopin cried out with keen delight, " I see toft azure and glistening white." Then Liszt smote slowly the deep bass chords And summoned the shadowy trooping hordes Of doubt and despair that rend and rack ' The soul in dark hours. " Away w ith the black, .'Awful vision ?"' cries Chopin. It passed ; And away from the bass Liszt s fingers flew fast. 'Then a witching, palpitant, brilliant strain -Which thrilled and kindled, and thrilled again ; -And Chopin cried quick, as the melody sped, **' Mine eyes rest on roses and cheeks that aie red." Awl so by his wondrous, exquisite art Li«zt touched, through both senses, the one human heart, And showed as a rose might, transformed to a bird, Than sound can be seen and hues can be heard.
