ALEXANDRA NEWS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Alexandra, May 3.
Owing to aorae misconception in the reading of the Education Act, no school committee was elected at the meeting last week. The Government have elected the following gentlemen as licensing commissioners, no nominations having been received by the returning officer: —Messrs Alfred Smith, T. J. Meredith, W. M. Chappel, W. Jones, and George Ahier. At a meeting held by the commissioners on Saturday last Mr Alfred Smith wm unnanimously elected chairman. With very few exceptions one of the last of the original owners of the lands in thU district died on Friday last, in the person of Mrs McFarlane, widow of the late Mr McFarlane, of Paterangi. The deceased has for some time pabt been in a most depressed state of mind, especially since the death of her husband, and a son who died some twelve months ago. Her funeral, which took place on Sunday last, was largely attended by the Paterangi settlors and a number of native fwonds. The Rev. Mr Hutson, Presbyterian miniiter, officiated at the funeral sen ice, and delivered * most impressive discourse to the mourners. The contractor for tho Waipa bridge, Mr Aubin Ahier, is making a satisfactory advance with that work, and considerately keeps up a communication across the river for foot passengers. Mr Frank McMinn has also the greater portion of the timber required for the repairs of the Mangapiko bridge on the ground. He has been somewhat delayed by not having obtained suitable labour without difficulty. There has been a great tangi going on for the last few days over the wife of Mr John Ormsby, the chairman of the native committee. Erysipelas was the immediate cause of her death after childbirth. There has been several cases of this fatal disease in the locality. The natives call it the Parihaka mate, as it is believed to have come from that settlement. There is great sympathy felt here for the husband, as he is left bereaved with a family of young children, and is much respected by both races.
