WORKS IN WAITOA DISTRICT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — As contractor of Sections Nos. 3, 4, and 5, Manngakawa-Waiorongomai road, permit me to reply to booib strictures of your Mnrrinaville correspondent, in your issue ot the Ist hist. In the first place permit me to state that the Board's engineer p tssed the work as finished according to .specifications. If these wore faulty the blame lies not at my door. The real facts are, that a member of the board urged me to do work outside the specifications to drain his land adjoining, ana failed in his attempt. Had I the road-making genius of General Wade and McAdatn combined, it would not suit or please a man who failed to get bis land drained at tny expense or at that of the ratepayers. The board's engineer is considered a competent officer, but does not— to his credit be it said— try to force contractors to do work they have not bargained for. — I am, &c, B. Montaguk. Waiorongomai, 3rd May.
