HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
The adjourned monthly meeting of the council was held on Tuesday evening last. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Oh. Knox, Barton, Sandes, Scott, Tippen, and Edgecumbe. Hospital and Charitable Aid.— The Mayor explained what had been dona in thi» matter since the last meeting of the council, and the resolutions arrived at by the conference of delegates were laid on the table.— On the motion of the Mayor, ■econded by Cr. Knox, Crs. Scott and S&ndes were appointed a committee to i peruse the Act, and make such recommendations as they may thiuk necessary to meet the requirements of the Waikato district. Street Improvemrnts and Lighting. —The works committee reported on various works completed and in progress. The various drains and water tables had been attended to, 117 loads of gravel had been laid in different places, and the furze on the station road had been cut down. The committee reported that a few loads of gravel were required in Knox-street and near the Post-office. They also informed the council that the gravel-pit in Victoriastreet, near the railway, is worked out, and that a new one ia required at onea. — Cr. Knox thought it very necessary that the works committee should inspect the footpaths during the wet weather, many portions required immediate attention. He had been obliged to get a few barrow loads of gravel laid down in Knox-streeet himself, in order that people might walk along it. The foot path in Victoria-street near Mr Odium's, and in other places, was also badly in want of gravel, and speaking of this, he thought the council ought to erect a lamp at Moore'b corner. Some years ago the council pat a post at this spot to keep vehicles and horse men off the footpath, and this might at any time cause an accident-, for which they would be liable. The mam roads coming into the borough were also in a very bad state. They were getting their gravel at a reasonable price at the present time, and the work ought to be proceeded with. He would also urge the council to engage the service's of a man to assist the foreman of* works, who could not possibly overtake the amount of work required to be done. Referring again to the question of street-light- 1 iug, he thought a lamp should be placed at the railway station gate. He also suggested that the plank at Pearson's corner be removed, as it was dangerous. — Cr. Tippen (chairman of the works committee), said he had given instructions to have the plank removp<t — The Mayor was of opinion that the main r i.ids should be put in thorough repair before the winter set in. — Cr. Tippen said he had intended to recommend that Hie main road fiom Seddon's hill to No. 1 Bridge, and to Webster's gate, together with the footpaths, be gravelled where required, and would ask that the council give the works committee the necessary authority to do this. Regarding street lamps, the item of lighting was already so high that he hesitated about suggesting an increase, but a* they were considering the subject he would point out that a lamp at the south west corner of Sydney Square and one al the corner of Grey-street and the Cambridge road were badly required. He agreed with Cr. Knov that the foreman of works should get assistance.—Some discussion then arose upon the question of how the work of improving tlie main roads shonld be carried out. Crs. Barton, Sandes and Edgecumbe were in favour of letting the job uy contract, and Cr. Sandes quoted the prices paid for gravel in other places in support of his argument that the work could be done cheaper by contiact than by employing the gravel contractor. Cr. Tippen pointed out that it was not a very large job, as the roads only required repairing in parts, not re->?ra\ elling wholly, whereupon Cr. Edgecumbe said the question assumed a very different aspect. Or*. Knov, Tippen, and Scott, thought it only fair to the gravel contractor who had taken the contract at a low figure that he should have the work. — After some further discussion it was resolved that the matter bhould be left to tha Works Committee to carry out.— On the motion of Cr. Knox the report of the Works Committee was adopted, with the addition that lamps be erected in the positions indicated, and the post at Moore's corner be removed. — The Works Committee were authorised to open a gravel pit on the side of the toad near Cr. Scott's house, and to prospect in the domain lands for gravel. The old gravel pit was ordered to be closed. Annual Accounts.— The Town Cl'tlc notified that a statutory meeting for the purpose of receiving and confirming the annual accounts would be held on Tuesday the 11th mat. Public Meehng be Public Buildincs. —The Mayor announced that the public meeting of burgesses to take into considera tion the proposal to appropriate an additional thousand pounds out of loan towards the public buildings would be held on Friday, the 14th inst. The Mayor's Expenses.— Cr. Edgecumbe gave notice to move that the sum of £50 be votfd to the Mayor to covor the expanse incurred in going to Welli igttm and W.iiwera in connection with the borough loan. In this amount no account was tiknn of the time and troublo expended by His Wm -.hip, because he knew Mr Graham would n->t accept any ren imeration on that he >re. Indeed the sen ices rendered to the b •« ough by the Mayoi were altogether beyond price. Trotting Over Bridge.— Cr. Tippen suggested that the Sergeant of Polictuii mid be asked to prevent people drivinr i>r riding over the traffic bridge at ottur than a walking pace. Agreed to. Cattle on the Roads.— Cr.^ Knox gave notice to move at next meeting that at the end of three months no cattla be allowed to wander on the roads. Several small accounts were passed for payment and the council rose.
