TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE RUKUHIA CHEESE FACTORY BY FIRE.
About 3 o'clock this morning wo received intelligence that the Rukuhia Cheese and Bacon Factory, together with the dwelline-house had been completely burned to the ground. MrSpeake, the manager, who sleep* on the premises, retired to his bed about 8, and was awoke just before 12 o'clock by the noise of the crackling of fire. He immediately hastened to save what he could, but the fire, which is supposed to have broken out in the roof, had tot. great a hold to enable him to get anything out worth much. The manager at once despatched a messenger to Mr Samuel Steele, but before that gentleman arrived, the whole of the premises had been burnt down, the only portion remaining being that of the engine-shed. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire. The stock of cheese on hand was between 30 and 40 tons.
