WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the council was held at the County Chambers yesterday. Present :— Mr Primrose (chairman), Crs. Runcitnan, Johnson, J. J. Smith, Barugh, and Seddon. AIKREMEBE' Bbidgb.— A petition from settlers on the Mereuiere district was read, asking that the proposed foot biidge be made a cart btidge ten feet wide.— The council resolved to adhere to the terms of ?h<JW*eh* Icofa*aqt.1 cofa*aqt. ; 7 " i—^ Pent,— The Chairman reported that ne had agreed * on* behalf of the council to undertake the management ' of the punt, as without this the Government would not accept a tender. —lt was resolved to write to Mr Brooks, asking thit fljtntkmatx' if Jie would (lake .1* lease of the 1 pXinV-'Cr. Johnson clalhtfed that the punt was about to be put at a most inconvenient place, and would only suit two settlers.— Cr. John&on said he did not know that at that time. He \vaunder the impression that the old site wotfld be retained. He did not thmk they could get Ariybody to look after it without pay.— The Chairman said they should find out what Mr Brooks was prepared to do.— Cr. Seddon would go further. He sugHg£Btqd;jth&t the Government be requested " to take' no further steps, as he understood no tender had been accepted.— Cr. Johnson did not think the council «hould undertake any responsibility in the matter. — The Chairman did not think the council could be held lesponsible. Forest Conservators. — The Undersecretary of Crown Lauds wrote intimating that clajrmeii of counties hod been appointed conservators of forests.* x ' County Subsidy and the Hospital Act,— The secretary of the Treasury wrote intimating that the subsidy would be withheld until the amount of the hospital contribution had been paid. — In connection with this matter ft letter was read from the Borough Council of Roslyn heai tily concurring with the action taken by the I \Vailtitto County Council in the matter of thB Hospitals and Charitable Aid Act. — A letter from the Mayor of Hamilton was read, requesting the council to appoint a delegate to attend a meeting to bn held on ![ Friday, the 23rd Apiil.— The ch.ihman was 'appointed a delegate, but it was agreed » tqatt 'as many of the councillor? » as oouKl atttend should be present at the conference.— Cr. Barugh complained that Bis remark* at the last meeting of the "Auckland Hospital Board had been mh adequately reported. He w»a made to say ' that the council would not go to law. In ■ addition to this he said they did not intend to pay, thinking that it would be a •ufficient protest to allow the , Government ,to,*topthe subsidy.— The Chtiiiuian said f it had been insinuated that Waikato was seeking to foist its poor upon the Auckland peoplk''He gave ari indignant denial to thin. , " They wtere quite willing to support theif own' poor, but they objected 'to pay three^KimesM much as they were fairly entitled to.— Mr Sandes, Engineer, 'to the council said, from enquiiies he had made v therWaikatu County, tafkingits nopulation in account, was treated worse than any other diatrict.'j-Cr. Seddon, and thought their stopping at home would be a further protest. — The Chairman thought they might go so far as to request Mr Barugh not to attend thi meetings pf the Efojird. Perhaps ho ought; to attend at the nevt meeting, when Mr Lake's motion would be brought on, though he did not think, ..and Mr rLakje, did not think, ( either, rf> that the motion had the reniotest chance* k>f bting carried.
