[BT TELEGRAPH.— PREhS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. At the Banco Court judgment was given on the application for a mandamus by Liddel, licens.ee of the Army and Navy Hotel to compel the Cook Ward Licensing Committee to grant a transfer of the license to him, and also to make null and void an order cancelling the licfinse of the hotel. The judge ruled against the committee, and said although their reasons for objecting to Liddel might be good, that i was not sufficioat ground upon which to ! cancel the license. The committee meet again to consider the question of transfer. The Defence Department are engaged in drafting a new Volunteer Act for next session. It is not yet settled whether the militia regulations will bo interfered with. The Government have decided to present Messrs Fantham and Steward, the two young men who, by signalling to the driver of the locomotive, prevented the destruction of a goods train at Stewarts Gully, Kaiapoi, with £25 each. At a meeting of the Cattle Board tins afternoon the veterinary surgeon reported on the case of alleged tuberculosis. He does not consider it a case of tuberculosis, and thinks the disease is not contagious or infectious. The board decided to take no action in the matter. The wnt isvuui by Mr Siddon*, of the Pier Hotel, a'/iinst Sir W. Fox, for libel, was served to-d.iy. The damages claimed are £5000, and the case will probably be heard at the ensuing! sitting of the Supreme Court. The secretary of the Treasury has sent the chairman of the Exhibition the following letter, with reference to the resolution passed by the executive committee of the Industrial Exhibition, recommending the presentation of complimentary medals of gold, silver and bronze to various person-, who rendered exceptional services in promoting the success of the Exhibition :— " I have the honour, by direction of the Colonial Treasurer, to inform you that tho proposal having been submitted to the Cabinet, it has been decided not to issue the medals, the expenditure on the Exhibition having already exceeded the amount authorised." At the Police Court at Masterton, John Pollock and John Frederick, charged with the larceny of tliree calves at Carterton, were committed for trial. The evidence for the defence was rt erved.
