THE PRESS LIBEL CASE.
[BY TELEGRAPH— PRhSS ASSOCIATION] DI'NKMN, Wednesday. Thk libel action brought by Dr. Steward, of Christchurch, against Roydhouse and another, proprietors of the Wellington Press, was commenced to-day, and is expected to last till Saturday. The plaintiff claim-s £2000 damages for the publication of an article in the Press headed "Extraordinary hospital scandal," "Revolting disclosure," "manslaughter or worse," " The Government trying to hush us up," in which the management of the hospital was condemned, and the plaintiff was by implication condemned for ha\ ing performed an operation which ended fatally on a patient in which incompetence and criminal negligence were displayed. Messrs Fitchett and Stranger applied for plaintiff, and the AttorneyGeneral and Mr Wilking for defendant*. Plaintiffs case was opened, but only two witnesses weie examined to-day.
