RAILWAY EXTORTION.
Ook Te Awamutu correipondent writes :— I hoard a' good story not long ago of how the railway department was outwitted. A certain landlord got a billiard table from Melbourne some time ago, and the freight from Auckland to Te Awamutn was exactly three times as much as it was from Melbourne to Auckland. On making enquries as to the enormous freight— nearly £7— he was told it was double the highest rate on Anything else. Boniface sold the table aftw a while and boupht another, and this time he determined to be level with the department, io he had the legs, sides, lamps and fittings shipped as furniture, and the dates shipped as slates, and the freight this time was only a trifle over £2, or rather less than one-third of the freight on the first table. What a fine thing it would be for the colony, or at least the despised North Island, if the climate of New Zealand would only disagree with Mr Maxwell and the present Minister for Public Works. Their valuable services might be better appreciated elsewhere.
