AN UNLUCKY MONTH FOR PARLIAMENTS.
Thk Court Circular has discovered the rather omino-i.s fact that British Parliaments which have met in January harp not as a rulo, been lonjr lived. Since lo 10 there have been twelve meeting* of new I'.uliaments in Janmry. The first of these I'arlnmonts— nimely, that which met on J.inu try 21, 1610— came to an untimely end within nix weeks of its *»irth, being dissolved on the 23rd of the following month. The next J-inuary Parliament met on the 16th of that month in Hit, and was di«solred on March 23, 1-511. A painfully Miort lived Parliament met on Jauuiirr 20. l.i.iS. and was dissolred on November 17 of the (Time ye»r. Even less fortunate »till wn.« A Parliament that assembled on th • '25th J.inn-iry 1.559, and wis dissolved 011 Miy 8 following, huving lired le*s than four months. On January 12, 1563. a Pirliament met which managed to «ur»ite nearly four year*, las'inic until J.imurt 2. 1567. In a 1021 Parliament met on Junnary 30, which was dissolved on January 6, 1622, lu-tiug leu than one rear. A ' Common wealth ' Parliament, 'which met on January 27, 16.39, came to grief in less than three months, being dirisolred on April 22 of the same yo&r. On January 22, 1689, Parliament met, and dissolved on February 6, 1690. The Parliament that m^t on Jinunry 28, 1728, was exceptionally fortunate. It lasted until April I ft, 1731; and the name good luck uttendod the Parliament th »t assembled on January 14, 1735, and survived until April 28, 1711. These two are the longe.st-lived January Pnrliuments on record. The Parliament that met on January 14, 1815), was dissolved ou February 29, 1820. In 1833 tho Parliament which met on J.mu.-iry 29 wax dissolved on Deeembor 3ft ISU.
