Mk H. C. Faku, of ChrUtohmch, the wellknown authority on pisciculture, arrived in W.iikato by the excursion on Monday. On his leturn he gut out at Hamilton, whereho wa-i the guest of Mr J« M. Gelling, who, a* scciotary of the Hamilton Domain Board, has had ch.inje of the t»i-cicultural operation- mi W.iikato. Mr Farr is up in Auckland for the pmposu of taking delivery of the salmon o\. i by the lonic, expected any day, and the Am m jean vyhitefish nva by the Al.i'ned.i, the incoming 'lwi*co mail bo.it. At th'j instance of Sir Julius Vogel he camn up to Waikato to s>eo Mr Gelling, with a view to determine the suitability of our liveis and streatrs for the propagation of salmon and other fi>h. On Tuesday Mr Gelling drove him ronr.d a con-id«?rable portion of the dmtiict, and Mr Farr expressed the belief that the W.iikato waters wore admirably adapted for both mlmon and trout. He mad* a careful inspection of the fish hatching and breeding contrivance* on Mr Gellinp's property, and thought that gentleman had dono wonders with the amount of money (»ome £20) placed at hi-, disposal. The younpf trout, about a thousand tn number, were examined and very favourably commented on, and Mr Fair remarked that no place could possibly buit them better than the shallows .ilonsr the river. Of the nalm»n ova the Hamilton Don)ain Board in to get 5000. the total of the consignment beinp 100,090. The white fish unfortunately are not adapted, according to Mr Farr, and many other hij?li authorities, for tint, climate. They require very cold water, and it is believed they would not do well out of Otago. Mr Farr freely gave Mr Gelling all the information he could in regard to the rearing of fish, &c, and expressed his readiness to at all times render any assislanco in his power.
