THE STRIKES IN MELBOURNE. [BY TELEGRAPH.-COPYRIGHT.] [REUTERS CABLEGRAM.] [Received Jan. 13th, 1 p.m.]
Melbourne, Wednesday. The Victorian Seamen's Union received a reply from New South Wales Union professing co-operation in the case of a strike. The Brisbane Union requested further information before giving a definite answer. The masters remain firm, and are determined if the strike extends to lay up their vessels altogether rather than submit to the demands. Correspondence is now passing between the Traders Council and shipowners, relative to the proposal of the first named body for the establishment of a board of conciliation for the settlement of the dispute.
