New Year's Day Athletic Sports.
The first day of the New Year was honouied in the usual style. The weather was uio^t bnlliant, hardly a cloud to be seen in the sky, and though rather warm, not at all unpleasant. A splendid westerly breeze was blow ing from the sea all day. A laigo number of settles, along with many visitors who arc staying here, were present during the day, and both young and oli] seemed to enjoy one of the greatest pleasures of these social gatherings consisting in mooting one another. Spouts. Maiden Rack. First prize, 15s ; 2nd, 5&. Distance, 100 yds. J. Fahvasser . . . . . 1 A. Falwasber . . . .2 Jno. Galvin and E. Wallis also ran. This race w.is well contested, and a very close one. 200vds. Haxihcu' Flu Race. Ist prize, 20- ; 2nd, ss. W. Queen, sci.itch . . . . 1 A Wallis, do 2 C. Storey and J. Phillips were close up in a well contested race, run in good form. One Milk Handicap. Ist prize, 30s ; 2nd, 10s. Win. Moore, scratch I A. Falw,is->er, 45yds 2 rio\« Rack, under 15 yeav«. Ist prize 10s, 2nd os. H. Oilman ... . . 1 F. Bnlford . . -2 Fred Momi was a good th'rd. Three >tl ers started, and a good race ensued, all tunning splendidly. Tlu or \v\it. In consequence of the great strength displayed by the Raglan youth, both Euroi pea'n and native, the rope, though new, broke, s-> the content was undecided. 200 yds Handicap Huudi.es,. Ist prize 4*l, I'lid 10s. A. Wallis scratch . ... 1 .1. W. Phillips 2yds __ 2 McQueen, scratch, Cogswell, syds, and Falvvasser, scratch, also lan and finished very clo*e to Phillips. This was a splendid iace, and ran in good form; the jumps were well taken, the pace killing, and the race almost a tie. Novkl Race. 10s. W. Moore .. •• 1 , Five others al>o ran. A vory amusing and oseitincr race. RiNvixu Hoi', Sn:p and Jimp. Prize 10*. Four entered for this race. J. P. Phillips and McQueen, after hard contesting, finally tied at 30ft lOin. Caxoi: Hack, Ist pii.se, 20s 2nd 10. Cher 9 hurdles, erected in H.ubour. This was a very exciting pee, causing much amusement, the winning canoe keeping its place from starting. All met with borne difficulty in getting over the hui dies. Unas Ru'Kwas won very nicely by a Maori pirl, Kami, with Sarah Newton 2nd. Several other Maori events concluded the contest. The usual finishing up took place at the Raglan Hall. Dancing kept up until bright Sol once moro tipped the eastern hills with gold.— (Own Correspondent).
