Otowohang \, January 2. Thk races hold hpre yesterday were eminently successful. The attendances was l.u go, and the various events secured a good number of cut lies. The weather was most intensely hot, which was in a measure a gieat drawback to enjoyment. There must h.ivo bci'n clo&o «iii n thousand people present, with a p.md e\n inkling of Europe in". The management was entirely under the control (if the native race and !ulf-c.i-tps with the excppirm of the judge, Mr J. \V. Ellis and Mr C. King. A refreshment b>oth, which was in the hands of the committee, did a roaring trade all diy, the pwwnder provided counting of sandwiches, calces and bread and butter; the li'iuors to wash it down with being !jin£pr ah 1 , which was dispensed in infinitesimal glasses (perh.vp< the bstter for the insules of those who partook of it), at sixpence a glass. Notwithstanding the heat, however, the great majority appeared to ba enjoying themselves There was great delay at time-, in Retting the large fields away from the starting-post, which was" vpry annoying. A large mound of rock. t>n ono hide of the race* course affoided a natural grand stand, which wis crowded by adventurous lovers of -sports to its voiy summit, where a slip of the foot would have been dangetous to life. Two horses fell at the second hurdle, but without injury to the ridi'rs. Won by half a length. Maiden Piate, distance 1 mile, entrance 10s first horse, £tj, second hoite £1. Mi Covlo'b Black Man t Mr Piiipi's Dick Hunt. ... t Tint teen horses started for this race, whii.-ii was ni'ht hotly contested from btart to fiuish, and resulted after a tremendous struggle in n dead heat between Coyle's Black Man and Piripi's Dick Hunt. Mr Brown'n Kainki 1 Mr Coffin's Koto 2 A large field of us pretty, clever looking ponies as one would wish to look at started for this race, which was a quick one from the frtart. OroKOHANGA Cup. Distance, 2 miles. Entrance, 20a. Pi ize: First horse, £15; second horse, £2 10s. Mr Maraku's Zulu 1 Mr Hetit's Hastings 2 A field of five started for this event, carrying 9st 71b, except the four-ye»r-old Hy polite, Bst 7lb. This was won easily by Zulu. Grasshopper and Anonyma wera scratched. Selling Rack. Distance, li miles. Prize, £5. Entrance, 7s 6d. Winner to be sold for £8. Mr \V. Bond's Nameless ... 1 Mr Coffin's Koto 2 There were seven entries for this race. The winner was sold for £10 ss. Skttleks' Race for horses whosa owners reside within a distance of 10 miles from Otorohanea. Distance, 1£ miles. Entrance, 10s. First horse, £8 ; second horse, £1. This was a capital race, and was won by Mr Paratini's Grasshopper ... 1 Mr Ngatoa's Mangaorongo ... 2 Coxsomtiox Race for all beaten horses during the meeting. Distance, 1 mile. Entrance, ss. Prize, £4. This event had eight entries, and was won by Mr Whitinui's Dynamite ... 1 Mr Ngatoa's Mokau 2 The deciding of the winner of the Maiden Plate was the next and last event. The two horses who ran the dead boat, Dick Hunter and Anonyma ran. Dick started favourite, and after a close contest won by a length. This concluded tho sports, all being, at least the European party, pvetty well weary ; the natives, however, kept up th« fun u-ell up to midnight on th« course, dancing, &c. Two under and over gentlemen were on the course and appeared to do a fairly good business. A totalisator, or nninething worked on the principle, was also present, with 5s tickets but the affair was but little patronised.
