TE AROHA.

[from our own correspondent.] Te Alton a, Monday. Christmvs Day was observed here in the time honoured fashion. There was a total cessation from business and fioin labour, and the town wore a strictly Sunday aspect. Religious sei vices were held in the Anglican and Roman Catholic places of worship, and were well attended. Boxing-day also passed over very quietly, no effort having been made on this occasion to get up any of the sports or festivities to which the dvy is usually devoted. In the afternoon there was a strong muster at the racecourse to witness a match fur £10 a-side ananged between the owners of the local hoises Auctioneei and Cttch'em. Auctioneer was "lightly the favoinite, and justified the confidence of his backers nnd of his owner, Mr T, Tierney, for he led from start to finish, and though Mi Graves's horse made a game struggle he never succeeded in getting alongside of his antagonist. A Huiry Sciury for a small entry helpod to uake up a good hour's amusement. Genial and most welcome rain fell here for an hour or two on Saturday forenoon. It was greatly needed, especially after tho diy and pitching storm of wind nnd dint which swept over the place on Wednesday last. It did not extend, however, over any great distance, the heaviest fall being in the neighbourhood of tho mountain, and the distiicts lying somo miles away aie still moie or less parched.
