Horse Races.

Cambridge Athletic Sports.

The horse races took place in tho afternoon and caused intense excitement to our Maori friends. The ptizes were not lar^e, but were contested with all the aidour of a Melbourne Cup. The entries were numerous, and no accident of importance occuired to m.ir the enjoyment. Mr P. Turner officiated as Cleik of Course, and Tangihaere as Judge. M vtoi:y Rick, distance 1 mile. Pii/e, £2 ; second hone, 15s ; entrance, s*, brought forth a field of eleven, many of them, animals that would not so very long time ago have di>graccd the Auckland course. Aftei a most o\citing race, tho winner turned up in Mr D.ivis'b (Maori) Hippolite (owner) 1 Mr Whiknui's Black Nipper . . 2 Hvn'dicu' Huunuo Rvok, o\er 8 nights. Distance, l^iiiile-*. Second hor-ic to save his stakes, In this race theio weie lOeiitne.s. Won by Mr (J. Mill's Nancy Leo (owner) 1 CoN'sorAnov Rvck, £1. Distance Inule, for which there were .seven entiies, .it Is, Won by Mr Hotit's Tangi (owner) . 1 Mr Waiw.u's Dynamite 2 I should mention that MrW. W. H ,'ginson officiated as st.irtcr, and wis \ery succi.-s^ful in getting his hor»es well away together. This concluded a fir->t-rate day'b amusemi'nt. In the evening the band g.uc a dance in the hall, which w.is well attended up to near midnight.— (Own Conespondent.)

These spoits came off in the Government paddock, on Saturday, before an attendance of nearly 1000 people. Tho cfFoits of tho committee, tho excellence of tho prograirinc, the exceeding liberality in the matter of pi izes, the wo.ither, mid the fact of tho occasion being a holiday, all tended to make tho meeting one of the most successful of its kind that has ever been held m the province. The train arrangements weio tho means of adding laigely to the attendance, many having come from Hamilton and other parts of tho district. Ono of the in(M pleasing featmes of tho d.iy was the presence of tho Te Awamutu band, under Mr Sibley. Their excellent rendoiings of the various pieces was the subject of very favouraclo comment. As to the gonoral arranegments, in some respects they were a trifle faulty. With buch aciowdof people it is well to have a substantially inped off coulee, and a committee of determined men to heo that the public keep outside of it. This was not done, and as a consequence tho public on soveral occasions uioit ineonstdciatfly crowded in upon the competitors. This not only mado the judging difficult but in tho ciu^-h ladies and others weio excluded from witnessing the different e\ onto. Theio weio other tjiioilcommgs inevitable to such gathctmgs, to which it is needless to refer. However, Satin day's oxperienco will servo to enable to committee to ptovido ngainst such in tho futuie. On the whole, en cumstances considered, thoio was very little to complain of, and tho committee, of whom wo might particulause Messrs Russell, Little, Stowait, Oauuchan and tho secretary, Mr Worthy, are to bo congratulated upon the gieat success they have achieved. Tho handicapping was also tho subject of most favourable comment, tho close finish with which each event resulted being very noticoablo. The throe stages of the Cup, which vvas won by McMillan, all resulted in brilliant contests, ono of which was so cluse that the judge's task was not by uny means of the most pleasant chaineter. The Tilting m the Ring, which pioinined to bo one of tho most entertaining ovents of tho day, did not come off until after (sundown, when it was impossible for the judge to satisfactorily porform his functions. The winnor of the event, Dillon, notwithstanding tho darkness, made a marvellous score, bringing in five rings, but as his honesty has been very

naturally impeached, it is questionable whether the committee will reward him with the pnz« money. The following is a detailed account of the respective event* :-- Maiden Race, I:2oyds-. Prize*, 20* and 10s. Entrance, 2> Od. Aitken . 1 Stewart .... 2 C. Crnig 3 S. Pl*w and Downey als > stilted Time, 23jsec*. Aitken led from staifc to finish. Running Hh.ii Jump. Puze-s 13s and 5* Entrance. Is. ,1. MoNeish (sft. ihn.) . 1 G. McNeish (sft. 7in ) 2 H. Carter . . 3 Only thtee competed. Caiter ga\o in after Liking the rod at 3ft. Dim. Cvmiuudgk Cup Hwpicvp. First pnzo, £20; second prize, £3; third prize, £2 10^. Nomination, 10-* ; acceptance, ss. W. McMillan, (i points 1 M. Monnock, 5 points . 2 ]). Ciaig, 4 points 2 Hughes, O'Haie and Walker wore scratched. This event was run in three stages, there being three heats in the fir-t stage. The following .ire the results of tho respective stages. ! Fmsr Stagk— First Hkat. D. Craig, 3yds. 1 i J. Agger, 3yds 2 H. Carter, 9yds 3 Also staited— McKmnon, syds ; Stewart, 7ds ; Hannon, 7ds ; and Maine, 7yds. This was an easy thing for Craig, who landed well ahead of his men. Caiter w.is not far behind Agger, making a good third. Time, lOJsecs. Second He it. Monnock, sctAtch . 1 W. McMillan, oyds . 2 Julian, oyds 3 Also stai ted— Minnex, 4yds ; Mettam, syd* ; J. McMillan, 9yds. This was a 1 cry well contested heat. Monnock, notwithstanding his heavy handicap, soon came to tho front, and made a brilliant finish in OJspcs. Third Hicat. M. Monnock, scratch (3 points) 1 D. Craig, syds (2 points 2 H. Carter. 9yds (1 point) 3 Also st irted— Agger, 3yds; W. Me Millan, 9yds ; and Julian, (iyds. Tins was a well contested stretch, in which the six placed men in the two preceding heats contested. Craig n.uiowly escaped a win. Monnack, however, with his usual reputation f"i shoit distances, baring got a capital start, soon cime through his opponents, and bieastod the tape just in front of Craig. Caitei was an excellent third. Si:coM) Sruji:, 2">o yards. W. McMillan, 18yds (3 points) 1 A- Juliin, 12yds (2 points) 2 M. Monnock, scratch (1 point) 3 Time, 2">secs. Also .started — Aggers, 7yds ; Mettam, oyds ; McKmnon, 10yds ; D. Craig, 9yds ; A. Stewart, 14yds ; and H. C.v ter, 15yds. This resulted in a most exciting finish, there being veiy little between any of the competitois at the finish. Monnock was the favounte, but McMillan had the best of it in the handicap, and though Monnock put on an excellent bit of -peed he failed to oveitake his man. There was some difficulty in ulacing the third man, miny being of opinion that McKmnon was placed. Third Stare, 400 yards. W. McMillan, 28yds (2 points) 1 1). Craig, 12yds (2 points) 2 M. Monnock, scratch (t point) 3 Also started— Agg.ir, 13yds ; Mettam, 12yds ; McKinnon, 17yds ; Julian, 18yds ; A. Stewart, 21ydH ; and H. Carter, 23yds. This stage was also closely contested, the excellence of tho handicapping being again manifested. McMillan had the advantage of a good Ktait, and maintained his advantage to the finish, Cr.ug losing by about a nose. The other competitors weie close up, partjcularly Monnock, who was only about 18 inches behind Craig. Boi-i' R\CK, under 1(5 years of age ; 150 yds. Prizes, 10s and 5s ; entrance, Is. E. Walker, «ciatch . 1 H. Hurt, 7yds 2 W. Johnson, 7yds . . 3 Also started — Kusabs, F. Burt, and Cow ley. E. Walker won as he liked. Walking Much. 2 miles. Piizes, £2 10s and 10s. Entrance, 2s (id. D. McCune (.scratch) . . 1 S. Goodman (21yds), Scott (73yds), K. Swayne (130 yds) also computed. Aftei a few laps Scott ga\ c up. At the ! end of the sixth round Swayne, who was I alternating his pace with an occasional trot, was warned off. On tho tenth round Goodman was disqualified, having been warned several tunes. The committee, however, subsequently awauled Goodman £1, a~s it wa,b thought that his style was not much woise than McCune's. Hurdle Rack. 440 yd s; 10 Inn dies, 3ft. (iin. Prizes, 50s and 10s. Entrance, 2s (!d. Juliin (lnds) . . . 1 J. Aitkin(2oyds) . ... 2 S. Mmiiex (10yds) . 3 No othcis started. This was an easy thins: foi Julian, who had an exceptionally good handicap, Running Hop, Sikp and Jump. Puze-i, 15s add ss. Entnvnce, Is. Miniiwx (42ft lin.) .. ..1 H. Cartel (41ft) ... 2 McCarthy and Edwards also competed. Caitei maintained hio ground very well, but the hardness of the surface evidently told on his piiformance. Vaulting with the Polk. Pi izes, 15s and 3s. Entrance, Is. Julian (lift) 1 (I. McXcish 2 Tho only other competitor was Kingsley. H m'-Mii.K Rack Handicap. Prizes, £,'{ and L'l. Entiance, 2s Gd. J. McMillan (")oyds) .. 1 T. Hamion (40yds) 2 H. Carter (00yds) 3 Also st.ii ted : D. Craig, sciatch ; Downey, 35yds ; C. Craig, 50yds ; A. Stewart, (50yds; Dillon, 70yds ;' G. Bowloy, 75yds. McMillan maintained his start, and soon overrun the other portion of the held. There was about ni\ yards between the first and second, and second and third. Milk Rack Handicap. Prizes, £7 10% £2 10s. Nomination, 7s 6d ; acceptance, 2s (id. S. Downey, 75yds 1 J. McMillan, 100 yds . . 2 T. Hannon, 75yds . . 3 Also stilted: D. Craig, scratch; C. Craig, 10VN; H Carter, 120 yds; J. Hams, 120yd-.; and R. Swayne, 120 yds. Downey w>n this ,n hn liked, coming strongly at the finish. Cnig was to all appearance too heavily handle ipped. Throwing the Cricket B ill and the Maori Women's X ice were cut out, there being no entries for the latter, and tune did not permit of t\w> former. A boy's race under twelvn, handicap, was won by F. Burt and T. McGarry second. Prizes, 7s (id and 2^ (id. Running Long Jump. Puzes, 153 and sa. Entrance, Is. Mininex 1 Handysido . . 2 Agger and Jury also entered for this event. The win was an easy one. The Obstacle Race wa* also struck out. Tilting in thr Ring.— Pri^e, 50s and 10s. Entrance 2s Gd. There were 20 entries for this event, all of whom competed. Unfortunately the day had become far advanced when the tilting staited, darkness having almost set in. Four brought in three rings. Dillon who went lound in the dark, and at a racing pace succeeded in bunging in five rings, which the committee refused to credit, such a performance baing to all appearances incredible. It was thought he had tho rings in his pocket when he started, and, we understand therefoie, it is not the intention of the committiee to pay him tho prize money.
