WANGANUI, Saturday. Tiik Governor visited Wanganui today, rtheu he was welcomed by lix thousand people. The weather was beautiful, and there was a splendid turnort of volunteers. His excellency visited the bre.ikwat<»r this afternoou, after being entertained at luuclieon by the borough councillors.
Monday. At the Luncheon to the Governor on Saturday, His Excellency, responding to the toast, -said the credit given to him by tlie Mayor for the defence works was due rather to the Government, and mnra especially to the lion- Mr Ballance, member for the district.
GRKYMOUTH, Sunday, It has been raining heavily since an early hour this
morning, CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Colonel Whittnorc left for the North last night. A serious hitch was very nearly occurling in regard to the Friendly Societies' excursion, but all has now been satisfactory arranged. The Union Company's agent informed the Societies' Committee that the Wdkutipu could nof; take the excursionists to Wellington as proposed, but he offered to take them per Tekapo on a night trip. This was considered unsatisfactory, and arrangements have been made for the TcpaKo to take the party on a day trip, leaving Lyttleton in the
morning. Monday, Yesterday a suit of clothes was found at JSumner, and identified as belonging to Arthur Howard, a fitter at the Addington Railway Workshops, who had been seen going towards the spot in order to bathe on Saturday afternoon.
DUNEDIN, Saturday. The question of crossing a railway crossing while a train was approaching came before the Police Court to-day.^F collision had taken place recently between an engine and a horse and dray, when the driver had a narrow escape, and the horse was so injured as to require his destruction. The driver was charged witl) an oilence, but as the Justices considered that from the position of the driver the accident was unavoidable they dismissed the case. The cricket season was successfully opened to-day, when the weather was favourable.
WELLINGTON, Monday. The following is the result of the band contest :—Oamaru, 368 points, Ist pi i7c, £7.1 ; luvercargill, 364 points, 2nd prue, £,">0 ; Christchurch, 530 points, 3rd prize, £'23. The others are Auckland, 530; Wanganui, 306 ; Wellington, 456 ; Dunedin, 476 ; Nelson, 332.
