Amicrcs ha\e been received from Wilson's Piomontory, stilting that at two o clock this afternoon Captain Thompson, of the Greenock steamship Gulf of Carpentaria (1 596 tons) armed with three boats belonging to the vessel, and reports that the Gulf of Carpentaria, bound from Newcastle to London via Adelaide, while oil' Cleft Island struck upon a rock not marked on the chart. The vessel became a total wreck, and .sank in thirty fathoms of water within three hours of .striking. The crew took to the boats and effected a landing at Wilson's Promontory. The disaster, fortunately, was unattended by loss of life.
