My Lad.
A suiTOB fine with gold and land, Paused at the garden gate ; H.? words of love were warm and grand, But, ah, he came too late. 1 thanked him for his oourtesy ; No heart to give I had, For 1 had given it long ago Unto my farmer lad. There was anger in my father's eye, His voice was harsh and stern ; My gentle mother with a sigh, Away from me did turn. My brother jeered, my sister oried, And said I had gone mad ; But the more they frown, the more they scold, The more I love my lad. My lad is dreised in " hodden gray," His toil-worn hands are bare, But hia heart is mine, and each sweet suiilo Ia an armour against care. And so with him I'll venture fate, For I know I.shah' be glad, And never pine for home or frienda As Itrn as I have my lad.
