HAMILTON LEGISLATIVE ASSOCIATION.

The usual meeting of the association was held at the Public Hall, on Thursday evening. On tho motion of tho Premier, seconded by Mt .Smith, a cordial vote of thanks was pasapd to the president and members of the Hamilton Young Men*. A. Coclnane, W Pritchard, and T. Kothwell were elected members, and the last named tv\o took their seats. Mr Verekei Bindon asked the Govcin incut wliether, in view of tho circumstance that the number of members had been laigcly increased, it was intended to issue a new printed roll for the us>e of member". Piotection, and while he protested against the introduction of a protective policy, he deprecated the notion that local industries recpurpd tho nursing and coddlm/ ptcscitbed by the bill befoits them. CTiptain Beere said that as the bill was a Ministerial meamuc, he felt bound by party ties to vote for the second reaJinsr, though he was frae to confess that he did not sympathise with the principle. Mussis French, Btndon and Templer spoke in opposition to the bill, which was defended by thvs Premier and the Colonial Secretary. At 10 o'clock Mr R. F. Sandes rose to move the adjournment of the debate, but as the Oppn-qttoii expressed a desiro to go to a division, the motion was withdrawn. The Minister for Public Works spoke at some length in reply, and ridiculed the tactics of the Opposition in -setting up the spectre of Piotection. He said that in the piesent depressed state of tho country local I industries were a necessity, and uuder this 1 Oill they would be established on a firm basis. The motion for the second reading was then put and loat on a div ision, by 12 to !).
