TIMARU, Thursday. A shepherd, named Coulter, wu found dead at the foot of a precipice on the HaUataramea station. Ho is supposed to have slipped on the snow above.
INVERCARGILL, Thursday. A joung man named James Fisher w«^ se\erely nijiued in Seawaid Bush to day. !(e was employed as bullock driver at Tappet's Mill, and while hauling a log it tolled off the shoe against a sapling, which in turn pinned Fisher against a tiee he was passing at the time. He vu brought to the hospital, where it w»i found the injuries to the lower part of the body were of a serious nature. The Boiough Council have resolved to lecommend the Goxcnment to amend hisTnew Corporations Bill so as to make the Mayor elective by the Council, instead of the ratepayeis, the present mode costing an outlay of about £'200 to Inver* cargill annually. They further recommend, with the view to economy, that the Government Auditor should audit the Corporation accounts as is now done for the Harbour Board and counties. It is stated that the piesent mode of elect* ing mayors is peculiar to New Zealand, and frequently leads to men being elected who know nothing of the previous business of the corporations or the conduct of public houses.
DUNEDIN, Thursday. A stabbing athay occurred to-day between two v orking men on the new road to the Heads. The men were quarrelling aver some tools, when a man named Newman drew his knife and stabbed the other named Edward Stallard in the abdomen. The wound is about an inch and a-half deep, but is not considered dangerous Newman was arrested by the Armed Constabulary men on the defence works, and Stallard was taken to the Hospital.
