Ho understood Major Wilson had no power to sign in this matter at all, and tho hfMid, knowing this, wore meiely stiwging the deputation on on tho strength of this empty quibble.- The Chairman, at. this stage, informed the deputation that unless they chose to conduct theniitilvps with more courtesy, and treat the board more respectfully, they had lx-tter withdi.iw from tho room altogether. — Mr MeVe.igh invoked the bjesHing and forgiveness of Providence upon men ho utterly lost to all sense of justice and public duty. — The deputation, evidently disgusted with the whole proceeding, withdrew, Mr A slier giving vent to sundry intimations of futuro serious Intention* regarding tho boaid its ho took hiH leave. Dyer, inspecting the mtpiovoment of this street m the vicinity of hi* residence, it wjs resolved that mi account of the lowness of the boaid's finance the work could not bo undertaken at present. -- Anotbor letter was received from Mr J. \i. S. KicluudMin re gravelling it poitiou of this stieot, and it was resolved that for the same reason the board could not supply tho men to fill the drays. Should Mr KiclmrdHon, liowevei, gravel the front of his propeity, the board would allow him any rr:iKonablo (juautity of gravel for Ins private Mu CahnacmanS Complaint. — A letter was leceived from Mi W. M. Hay, as solicitorfor Mr David Cainachan, iesf»ectingthe abatement of a ceitnin nuisance cumed by the manner in which the stiuet has been constructed, adjoining hi* property, on which he at present resides. The water of lux well was polluted, to the great dangor of the health of himself and family. An immediate lomcdy was asked for, or el«o pmceedingrt would be commenced forthwith. — After Homo discussion the matter was referred to tho streets committeo to act. Tho manner in whicli that work had been carriod out wai simply disgiaceful. As a matter of fact, tho street was ono bed of mud from one end to tho other. — Tho Chairman replied th it the streets committee was responsible for tho woik. — Mr Lewis paid a frvr ooinplimentn to the stieets coinuntton. He thought this body wanted reoigauismg. Tho only man ulio seemed to do any work wan Aft Hewitt. Mr Hewitt was in fact the streots r<nniinttee. Messrs Houghton and (iillctt did not seeui to do anything at all. — Mr (iillett said that to do tho work whick Mr Hewitt was patiidtic enough to do for the ratepayers he would want at the very least £200 a year. He would be very happy to propose Mr Low is as a member of the sticets committee. —Mi Lewis declined tho honour. Mr Hewitt said the contractors had offered to gravel Duke slieet over again. — Mr (-fillet blamed the Hurfacomnn for tho manner in which the woik had boon done. — Tho contractors account wa« passed for payment, and the matter ended. OvKKiittAKT.— The Clerk said the board 1 * overdraft now amounted to £101. That day's accounts would bring it up to the respectable sum of £'.~»00.
