He thought this an absolute necessity in view of the number of fires which had occurred recently. He stated that the Star and Shamrock hotels were the only ones at present so provided. Mr Lewis drew the attention of the bench to the fact that he had provided for a fire escape in the new building, and that it was shown on the plan. Scrgt. Gillies said in pointing out the necessity of the escapes, rope ladder would be required only where no direct means of egress to tho balcony from bedroom* existed. The bench having approved of tho plan* submitted, and tno police report buing favourable, granted the license for the new building. An application from Mr James Do\ in for a renewal of tho license of the Commercial Hotel wan received. A bushel of fun was had at a St. Paul saloon Apiil 1, by means of a rather ciucl and practical Apiil fool's clay joke, some gum joker nailed a twenty dollar gold piece to the floor, and by mean* of a battery concealed behind the bar, a thin wire was attached. Then the spot was soaked with water, and whoever attempted to pick up the bonanza was tiented to a terrific shock. The air of that place was blue with piofanity all day.
