London, March 16. I\ the House of Lords to-day, Lord Northbrook, the tirst Lord of the Admiralty, announced that the colonies ot Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia had applied to the Imperial Government for advice as to the formation of a navy, and the Admiralty had replied th.it it would readily, and indeed was anxious to assist the colonies in the matter. The European Convention, for the settlement of the Egyptian financial question, has been signed in London by the delegates of the Yov, ers concerned.
Hongkong, March 16. News is to hand tliitt the Peninsular and Oriental mail steamer Surat, while in Chinese waters lecently, »ai stopped and searched for contraband of war by a French war \essel. It is announced that the British and China squadron lias been ordered to rendezvous in this port.
