THE QALE AT TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE Aroha, Monday.
The heaviest gale that has been experi enced here for a length of time occurred on •Saturday. Strong gusts were felt throughout the night previous, and .is the day advanced the wind (which was from the eastward) increased in violence until notm, at which time it blew with hurricane force. In this township no great amount of damage was done, the havoc being chiefly confined to tho levelling of fences, and the shifting of two or three small houses off their foundations. The pile-driver at the bridge was blown down and smashed, and the roof of Walker's Hotel also suffered «lightly, but luckily the gale moderated befoio any serious damage was done. At Waiorongomai, however, it was much more destructive in its effects, several cottages being there blown down, and in one or two instances, completely destroyed. Several others wi«re al«o mot c or less injured, and gat dent have likewise suffered very considerably. At the mines a number of large trees were torn up by tho roots, mid heavy limbs were snapped off from othurs, but fortunately no harm was done to person or property in that locality. In the \Vaitoa district the storm raged with great violence, and caused some damage Mi iff at* hotel suffered, having the ioof of the balcony completely carried away, and other properties sustained slight injuries. News to hand from Lower Thames states that the Sale was the heaviest that has been felt in hat quatter for years. The rainfall here was not very great, but for two or three hour* on Saturday forenoon there was a smart downpour. Since then there have been occasional heavy showers.
